Two best friends. One big lie. The best bake off EVER.
Bella Bradley is the queen of television baking – a national treasure. Her Christmas specials have been topping the ratings for years and her marriage to Peter ‘Silver Fox’ Bradley is the stuff of Hello magazine specials. But this year things are going to be different.
For Amy Lane, Bella’s best friend from school, life hasn’t held quite the same sparkle. And when Amy’s husband walks out three weeks from Christmas, it seems their lives are further apart than ever.
Amy has watched Bella’s rise to fame fondly, despite the fact Bella was always a terrible cook. But when she realises that Bella’s latest Christmas book is made up entirely of Amy’s mother’s recipes, the gloves are off…
After winning a competition to appear on Bella’s TV show, Amy is going to make sure that for Bella and her viewers, this will definitely be a Christmas to remember…
I’m not the biggest chick lit fan I have to say, I’m more of a crime/thriller kind of girl, but since I’ve began blogging I’ve had to spread my wings and widen my horizons. Suffice to say I am so glad I have, as authors like Sue Watson write such delightful and entertaining books. I hold my hands up and admit this is the first book I’ve read by Sue Watson, but it certainly won’t be my last!
The first thing I have to say about Bella’s Christmas Bake Off is I love the ingenious chapter titles, some of them I was so intrigued by I just wanted to flip to them straight away, an example being Chapter 5 A hot Macchhiato and a hormonal SAS, what’s that all about?, well you will just have to read the book and find out for yourself!
Amy our leading lady is not your typical lead, she has been married for twenty years, the wrong side of thirty(not that there is anything wrong with being over thirty), and has grown up children. Now Amy should be enjoying life with her husband Neil, that is until he drops the bombshell he is leaving her for a much younger, pole dancing model. I really like the character of Amy she is just so normal. Bella on the other hand appears to have it all money, beauty, a handsome husband, a mansion and a successful TV career. I started out disliking her character she was brittle and cold, but as we learn more about her life
And her childhood, Bella lets her guard down and we get to see a softer side to her. As you would expect with a book with bake in the title there are many references to food, which at times made my mouth water, and were so vivid I could almost smell them.
This book is full of Humorous scenes that will make you laugh out loud, especially the ones between Bella and Amy where they are being filmed for a Christmas special, at one point I choked on my coffee I was laughing so much! It’s not all laughter, there are some tears as we learn about hidden secrets, and lost friendships, but this is definitely a “feel good” book, that will leave you wanting more of Bella and Amy antics.
I really enjoyed Bellas Christmas Bake Off, and although it is a Christmas book you could read it anytime of year. Well written with characters that become to feel like friends, and full of humour throughout Sue Watson has wrote a book that will keep you captivated until the very last page.
