I’m a huge fan of Caroline Mitchell’s Detective Jennifer Knight crime series, so when I saw the author was writing a brand new series featuring Detective Ruby Preston I must admit I had some reservations, the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” sprung to mind, but I knew if anyone could pull off a new crime series it would be Caroline Mitchell (she’s not one of my favourite crime writers for nothing), and I’m thrilled to report its a book that will grab you by the throat and keep you in its clutches until the very last heart stopping page.

With a highly original plot and a spine chilling antagonist called Lucy who gave me the heebeegeebees, this is one character you don’t want “knocking” on your door! She really is one very disturbed and twisted individual. Lucy’s motives for killing go beyond chilling, her reason for her crimes will send shivers down your spine. Caroline Mitchell describes Lucy’s thoughts with such conviction I felt I was looking into the darkest corners of her mind, she really is one very twisted scary individual, the author certainly knows how to create a complex  but intriguing character that’s for sure.

As for Detective Ruby Preston I loved her character she’s very original compared to most fictional women detectives, as she has a personal relationship with crime lord Nathan, this added an extra dimension to her character. It’s also a relationship that I feel could compromise Ruby’s career and cause her numerous complications, which for me added another intriguing thread to the plot, and one I hope will be further explored as the series develops. Ruby is audacious, daring and hotheaded, but don’t think for one minutes she’s your usual crime book stereotype Detective, oh no Ruby’s highly original and the author has created a character who I am eager to learn more about.

I’m not going to say much about the plot as I want the reader to enjoy every dark and deliciously disturbing chapter for themselves, but what I will say is Love You To Death has the most unnerving prologue its brutal, chilling and creepy as hell, and from then on in the pace is relentless. This book is full of heart in your mouth moments, I became so engrossed in the book every little sound literally made me jump out my skin.

Expertly plotted and truly terrifying, I love the way Caroline Mitchell’s descriptions bring the book to life, especially the crime scenes, they are so vivid you feel like your there amid the horrific scenes, so much so my stomach was churning. It’s dark and very sinister, the authors writing gives this book a constant sense of unease and malice . I found Love You To Death to be disquieting and very disturbing and that’s why I loved this book so much. Although I am pondering Caroline Mitchell’s state of mind as this book is so damn twisted. Would I recommend this book? Hell yes I certainly would, this is a book not to be missed.

I won’t be giving Love You To Death 5 stars, but I will be giving it the very prestigious GOLD STAR AWARD. I give this award to a book I feel covers every aspect of what I look for in a good read, fantastic plot, great characters and a storyline that drew me in from the first page and kept me in its grip until I reached the very last page.
